The project for composer Matthew Bourne sees the creation of a new recording studio by replacing a tumbledown garage with a micro piece of architecture that responds to the context in which it’s located. Sometime in 2019, Mary Ann Hobbs tweeted about a track she’s playing on BBC 6music. An expansive ambient electronica piece by composer Matthew Bourne called ‘Keighley’An incongruous name for such a spacious piece and tweets were sent along those lines. Matthew replied explaining it was inspired by the view from his studio, of the landscape that surrounds the town. Made perfect sense – a response to […]

The vision for the Iron Line is to sensitively transform the coastal lagoon of Hodbarrow, a lakeland peninsula on the Cumbrian coast into a nationally significant visitor attraction; uniting art, heritage and ecology. Millom and Haverigg were invited to bid for a share of the Government’s £3.6 billion Towns Fund in 2019. Working alongside Copeland Borough Council, the Millom Town Deal Board secured an offer of £20 million from the fund for projects it identified as local priorities, the Iron Line project was fortunate to be one of those. In 2021, Gagarin Studio, alongside landscape architects Layer, won the project […]

A former Leeds church is to be reimagined to create a new ‘people’s palace for poetry’ spearheaded by the Poet laureate, Simon Armitage. Gagarin Studio have supported the steering group from the early days, to identify a suitable site and undertaken a feasibility for the repurposed Trinity St Davids on Woodhouse Lane, in Leeds. The brief to create an accessible, transformative building that celebrates all things poetry, has been a wonderful project to develop. The National Poetry Centre will welcome people from all ages and backgrounds and provide spaces and resources for people to meet, share, perform, read, borrow, create, dine […]

We’re delighted to be working with Arvon to undertake an ambitious reworking of their Yorkshire Writing House, Lumb Bank near Hebden Bridge. The ambition is to reposition Lumb Bank as an engine house for creative writing development in the north of England. The house, which once belonged to Ted Hughes, was described by novelist Louise Doughty as ‘the most inspiring place imaginable for writers’. The project approach will need to pragmatically resolve some key challenges within the buildings and setting whilst ensuring the character of place is preserved and enhanced. We read the initial brief and immediately thought it was a perfect […]

IOU Theatre are an established International arts organisation who have relocated into Victoria Mill at the Dean Clough Complex. The phased project creates a new permanent gallery and exhibition space within Dean Clough; housing the IOU archive and a changing exhibition programme, as well as a large scale IOU Studio and offices for the company. Our approach has been to maximise the budget by developing inserted elements that are offset from the texture and history of the building fabric; to express the volume and height of the setting and to introduce new contemporary elements, thereby improving comfort, connectivity and accessibility; […]
