Orangebox Young People’s Centre
Halifax
Project Info
Completed December 2013
RIBA Stages 0-7
“We worked with Steve on Orangebox, a £4m young people’s centre. He led me and a large group of young people, trustees, councillors and other stakeholders on a journey to transform our ideas into an award winning and inspiring place for young people. I use place rather than building as he didn’t just design a building but helped us shape an ethos, an organisation and a community. Though the building itself is simply stunning, a testament to Steve’s consultative and imaginative approach. It inspires and delights our young people – we couldn’t have asked for more.”
David McQuillian. Director. Square Chapel Centre for the Arts
Orangebox Young People’s Centre was built in Halifax for Square Chapel Centre for the Arts and funded by the Myplace BIG Scheme. The centre links to the Grade 1 listed Piece Hall and sees the conversion and extension of two Victorian buildings, originally built to store fruit and veg. The completed extension includes a wide variety of facilities for young people, including a dance studio, recording studio, climbing wall, rehearsal rooms, advice and counselling support, roof level skate park and roof garden. The design navigates the complex levels dictated by the topography and variety of existing buildings whilst forming new routes and connections through the area; helping to establish Piece Hall as a focus for renewal in Halifax. Involvement from the early days in 2008 included assisting the wider client body and a core group of Young People, through the various rounds of funding and approvals. The project was completed in 2014, winning a recent Civic Trust Award and is proving to be a great success within the town. Steve lead the design process throughout, as Associate at StudioBAAD and then completing the building as GAGARIN Studio.
